So here were some of the suggestions from you for topics we could cover. I’m going to comment on each and everyone of these topics so you know how much I can help you, and we can decide as a class what to do about it, ok?
I have a lot of experience with Rhino CAD, rendering, 3D printing. What I can show you, is a free version of Rhino for MAC, and I can also share with you what I know about how 3D printing works and some of the lessons I’ve learned. Unfortunately, we don’t have 3D printers at Seneca (yet), so any printing we do would have to get sent out to a printshop in Toronto, but that’s also something we could talk about, is what shops are around, and what kind of services they provide.
As I said, I have a lot of design films. There’s Helvetica, Objectified, Urbanized, Design Thinking, My Architect, The films of Charles and Ray Eames, Eames the Painter, Visual Acoustics, Art & Copy, Art of the Steal, etc. Any videos that I will be finding on YouTube that are relevant to our discussions, I will be posting on the blog
I would love to have more discussions about this, and I have a deep interest in sketching and illustration. Your syllabus requires that you buy and bring a large sketchbook, and I would encourage you to always have it out and ready to use.
Website design/branding - other classes
I have done a little bit of UI design as well as some branding, and so I do have some sense of brand trends and have experimented with a few myself, so that’s something we can discuss for sure.
I don’t know much about website trends, although every so often I get a link to an interesting website or webapp. So we could spend a good chunk of time visiting interesting websites and discussing what we find. This would be a good reason to bring laptops to class. The monitors have VGA cables and hdmi plugs. I’m trusting you to have the appropriate adapter for your laptop, as they can get rather pricey.
Public Awareness - Social Issues
I have a lot of interest in social issues because of my experiences in Inclusive Design. So if we want to talk about what issues are out there, where to look for more info, how to get involved, what kinds of interesting films, or community groups exist, and how these issues affect us in our daily lives, I would LOVE to talk about it, but be careful, I could probably talk for months.
Since we have an award winner in class, it would probably be really cool to talk about what kind of work wins design awards. We can look at what kinds of awards are out there, how to apply for them, which ones are the most recognized and perhaps what kind of work seems to be getting the most attention?
Workshop - New Techniques, Skillshare, Show & Tell
A lot of professionals say the same thing, ‘I wish I had more time to learn new things’. So perhaps we can try to have a discussion about how to learn things quickly, how to learn from each other, and how to stay curious once you’re out in the working world, but still have lots of learning to do.
Critiques (personal brand, etc.)
I love critiques and welcome them. If you want to bring in work from other class, you just have to let your other prof know that we will be organizing a critique in our class, and that you will be taking the time to have an honest peer-review of each other’s work. So it’s going to be my job to, ‘critique your critique’, ok?
Design Within Music / Media Production
This could make for some fun experiments, no? Do you think we need sophisticated tools to do media production, or do you think we could try some stuff with just whatever tools we have available.
Furniture & Interior Design
As an industrial designer, I do have a lot of experience with this. I can possible show you some prototyping techniques that designers use to conceptualize work without breaking the bank.
Sharing new things, Discoveries
It would be great if every class we show up with something to share with others: website, physical thing, curiousity, technique. These can get posted to the blog, or we can use these things to drive our discussions/research/activities for the day.
